My Life, My Story
In the My Life, My Story project we worked on telling a personal story through digital storytelling. The topics ranged from personal identity crisis to family issues that have affected them since they were young. I examined my personal life to find what I really had struggled with in my life, and I tried my best to use my storytelling skills to tell the story. Yet my mind drew a blank, so I though to the most tragic moment in the recent history. That was when Brazil lost 7-1 to Germany in the semi-finals of the World Cup IN Brazil. That was something that genuinely made most of my family feel pretty bad. My father, being from Brazil, actually felt sort of sick at seeing the game, watching his great countries team be humiliated in their own country. Thus I decided to create my story on this event. Though, I decided to take it lightheartedly and make it a little funny. Below is the link to my video, I hope you enjoy.

Power, Privilege and the Purse: Humanities
The "Power, Privilege and the Purse" project was all about finding and discussing about some of the many inequalities that can be found in the United States of America. It was about looking into the inequalities that plague a large portion of society in the US and many around the world. These topics vary from the inequalities women face within the work place involving their treatment and their wages all the way to the way undocumented immigrants are treated within the country and some of the struggle they face within every day life. In Humanities, we wrote position papers about specific topics, mine being about undocumented immigrants and the guest worker programs.
In Humanities we would spend a majority of our time learning about the diverse range of inequalities that there are in the United States. Some days we would talk about the differences in education in low income neighborhoods compared to higher income ones and other days we would talk about Islamaphobia and how Muslims are sometimes mistreated even when they pose no threat. We kept journal entries on all of the different subject we learned and in the end ended u with many pages of just our thoughts on many of these subjects. Towards the end of the project we began to plan out our symposium and research exactly what we would be speaking about in our panel.

in the end I learned that many people face many injustices and lack certain privileges just because of one or sometimes many attributes they poses. Such as the color of their skin or their religion and many times their sexual orientation. And through these inequalities they have to suffer a lesser quality of life than those who have much more privilege. So I learned that I must be grateful for the privileges that I do have because there are many people around the world and even maybe in my own neighborhood that aren't as lucky.
What was my favorite part? I guess really just being able to go out there and being able to learn about the world that we live in was probably my favorite part. This is mostly because I think that the best way to learn is through experience and with this project we were able to learn from others experiences and what they've lived through and some of the many struggles they had to go through and face. |
The Power of One: IRC
The International Rescue Committee is a non-profit organization located all over the world but our focus was directed towards the one in San Diego. This organization helps refugees from all over the world seek support. The IRC does an incredible job of assuring safety inside their walls by offering shelter, clothing, healthcare, education and help with financial assistance such as rent. The IRC was founded in 1933 by Albert Einstein ("History of the International Rescue Committee." History of The IRC. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Apr. 2016). It was founded by him because he wanted to establish safety for Germans who were fleeing from Hitler's dictatorship.
For the IRC my group worked on both creating a pamphlet that could allow people interested in the IRC to learn about the Somali refugee crisis and the current state of their country and it’s people, and a list of names and contact information that the IRC could contact and invite to it’s latest film festival. The pamphlet required research on Somalia based on where it is geographically, it’s current political state, the state of it’s people. We also researched the Somali refugees and where they go when fleeing Somalia, and about the resettled Somali refugees currently in San Diego. This pamphlet would be for people beginning to involve themselves in the IRC so that they could learn more about Somali refugees and about what the situation is in their country. It’s also for anyone wanting to learn about Somali culture and specifically their refugee population.
Our group has learned about many of the processes that refugees have to go through, and what their journey looks like. We took a look at the process of resettlement and what it’s like moving to a new foreign country. Although most importantly we learned of the importance in helping refugees. The IRC has been able to make a difference in an uncountable number of people, and it is that help that has kept people moving. Thus it is important that we help out the ever growing population of refugees in the world, to not only survive what they’re going through, but to succeed in the time to come. |
