Career Day 2015
For Career Day this year I decided that I'd want to visit a motivational speaker, although I knew it wouldn't be easy. As most of the time they are travelling and giving conferences. Luckily, thanks to my friends they told me of a motivational speaker that lived close by, and was related to another friend of mine. Once I got into contact with them and set up a meeting I knew I was ready to take a look into my potential career.
Jeff Salz is what you could call a professional in his field. Speaking publicly for over twenty years all around the world, and even inducted into the Speaking hall of fame, I decided Jeff Salz is a great example of what I would like to do in the future.
We met at a cafe in Encinitas, the Pannikin. An old railroad station converted into a coffee house. Since his schedules aren't particularly busy and he doesn't travel as often as he used to we decided that a coffee house visit would have to do. Most of my time there was spent listening to him tell me stories working as a motivational speaker. I asked him questions such as "Where did you study before working?" and "What interested you in the field of speaking?" and with every answer came a story. Jeff told me about his time spent travelling around the world climbing mountains and meeting people. Which all lead to his job at a local college as a professor, which then led to him as a speaker. Jeff and I spent a good amount of time talking about his presentations and what he usually teaches about. |
After we had talked all we could and discussed what was on our minds we parted ways. Not before I asked him one final question, "Do you have any advice for me? After all we've said?" Jeff responded "Live and interesting life." This in my opinion is what I think will help me succeed in the career of motivational speaking, because the only way to motivate people and teach people is through what we've learned in our own lives. He told me you wouldn't hire a war veteran to talk about economics, or a victim or paralysis to talk about Mathematics. You'd want them to speak on what they've lived as a war veteran or what they learned from being a victim to paralysis. That is what I hope to be in the future, someone interesting that should be able to teach through what I've learned in my life. I definitely hope to have a career like this in the future, as well as a college degree to add on to my interesting life. If I were to have to opportunity to participate in any internship I could for next year I think I would want to work with someone like Jeff. Someone who still travels, and does presentations and is living what Jeff did ten years ago. It would be nice to learn from them and maybe help them plan their presentations.
All in all Career Day this year was a huge success in my opinion and was most definitely helpful.
